FACILITIES
The Music Department facilities are
located on the 4th, 5th, and 6th floors of the North
Building. These facilities include:
A high-tech keyboard laboratory
The keyboard laboratory has 23 high quality
Roland electronic pianos that can be coordinated by
a master control panel for solo and ensemble playing.
This lab is used primarily by the piano classes and
the music theory laboratory classes.
Two state-of-the-art sound synthesis
studios
These studios are used in the Computer Music
class and in other projects involved with electronic
music composition projects and digital and analog
recording. They also support ethnomusicological transcription,
and equipped to assist with materials gathered through
ethnomusicological fieldwork.
Sixteen practice rooms
The Music Department has sixteen practice rooms
as well as a chamber music rehearsal studio. Twelve
of the practice rooms are equipped with grand or upright
pianos; the remaining four rooms are equipped with
computers and electronic keyboards for MIDI work.
The rehearsal studio is equipped with a Steinway grand
piano. Music majors may use the practice rooms on
a daily basis by signing up for a time slot at the
beginning of the semester in the department office.
Two teaching studios
Instrumental and vocal lessons are taught in teaching
studios on the 4th floor of Hunter North. Room 413,
a studio equipped with two Steinway grand pianos,
music stands, and a library of chamber music, is normally
the place for individual piano lessons, duo-piano
coaching, and rehearsals of concerti and other repertoire
for two pianos. Room 415 is equipped with one Steinway
grand piano, music stands, and a library of vocal
repertoire. It is normally used for voice lessons.
Both studios are also used for individual lessons
on orchestral instruments or for coaching small chamber
music ensembles.
The Brecher Rehearsal Hall
The Brecher Rehearsal Hall is the Music Department's
largest instrumental and vocal rehearsal space. It
is equipped with playback and recording equipment,
moveable risers, seating for 100, and adjustable acoustic
curtains. The Brecher Rehearsal Hall frequently doubles
as a secondary recital hall for Music Department events.
The Ida K. Lang Recital Hall
The Ida K. Lang Recital Hall, a 144-seat architectural
gem designed by the firm of Abramowitz Kingsland Schiff
and inaugurated in the spring of 1995, is the jewel
of the Music Department's new facilities. Over 60
concerts are held there every year. The New York Times
has described the hall's acoustics as "superb:
warm, close, and discreetly resonant."
