Dr. Rose
Dobrof, the founding director of the Hunter College Brookdale Center
on Aging and a legend in the field of aging, was honored on June 16
at a fundraiser at the Essex House Hotel in Manhattan. Three hundred
fifty people attended the annual spring gala, which raised more than
$350,000 for Brookdale, the largest multidisciplinary academic gerontology
center in the New York metropolitan area.
Also
recognized at the event was the Brookdale Foundation, which, since
the 1970s, has been a creative and influential force in advancing
gerontology and geriatrics and introducing innovative services for
older Americans. The Foundation provided the seed money for the creation
of the Brookdale Center.
"When
Rose began as the executive director of Brookdale in 1974, few people
had identified the study of people over the age of 65 as an important
area for research and education," said Jennifer J. Raab, President
of Hunter College. "Today, the Hunter College Brookdale Center
on Aging is recognized as one of the premier citywide resources for
improving the quality of life of older adults."
"I'm grateful to President Raab for this honor and to the people
who have served as my mentors and collaborators over the years,"
said Dr. Dobrof. "I still consider my career in the field of
aging a work in progress and I look forward to the days ahead of me."
The Brookdale
Center on Aging comprises six institutes, divisions and departments:
The Institute on Law and Rights of Older Adults, The Institute on
Intergenerational Education, The Institute on Mutual Aid and Self
Help in the Field on Aging, The Training Division, a research department
and a student scholarship and placement department.
