Robert
De Niro and Jane Rosenthal, co-chairs of the Tribeca Film Institute,
Madelyn Wils, Institute president, and Peter Scarlet, Tribeca Film
Festival Executive Director, today announced that the Tribeca Institute
and Festival have joined forces with the Foundation of the Marrakech
International Film Festival to create a pioneering filmmaking workshop
in Morocco this fall. Eight Hunter College film students and eight
Moroccan film students will participate in the Marrakech/Tribeca Filmmaker
Exchange, to be held in Marrakech November 6 - 20, in conjunction
with the Fifth Marrakech International Film Festival, which will run
November 11-19.
One of America's most honored film directors, Martin Scorsese (Taxi
Driver, Raging Bull, Good Fellas) will be joined by Iran's Abbas Kiarostami
(Where is the Friend's Home?, Close-Up, The Taste of Cherry), in offering
master classes which will be among the program's core offerings. They
will be joined by actor Jeffrey Wright (Basquiat, Angels in America,
Broken Flowers), and filmmakers from both the US and Morocco in presenting
a series of events which will enable aspiring filmmakers from both
countries to work together and learn from each other as they grapple
with the intricacies of the filmmaking process.
The eight Hunter College students participating in this event are
majors in the Department of Film & Media Studies’ undergraduate
film program and MFA program in Integrated Media Arts. Hunter Associate
Film Professor Mick Hurbis-Cherrier is serving as the principle curriculum
designer for the program and will also be one of the workshop instructors.
