Academics

CONCENTRATIONS

Given the interdisciplinary organization of the Department of Africana, Puerto Rican and Latino Studies, students may elect to concentrate their program of study in the Africana sequence, Puerto Rican/Latino sequence or a combination of both with courses in social sciences and humanities.

MAJOR

Several courses within this major may fulfill parts of the Hunter Core Requirement.

A total of 30 core credits are required of all Africana, Puerto Rican and Latino Studies majors.

Students must choose 6 credits from:

AFPRL 20100  African History from Human Origins to 1600 CE
AFPRL 20200  African History Since 1600 CE
AFPRL 20300  African American History I
AFPRL 20400  African American History II
AFPRL 20900  Introduction to Caribbean History to 1900
AFPRL 21000  Introduction to Caribbean History: 1900 - Present
AFPRL 24100  Puerto Rican History to 1897
AFPRL 24200 Puerto Rican History Since 1898

3 credits from:

AFPRL 28100  Fieldwork in African American/Latino Communities

Of the remaining 21 credits, 12 must be taken at the 300 and/or 400 level. At least 3 credits  must be taken in Puerto Rican/Latino studies if the Student's concentration is in Africana studies and vice versa.

Honors

AFPRL 499 Honors – 3 hrs, 3 cr.; Prerequisite: Dept. permission; upper Jr/Sr with 3.3 cumulative GPA, 3.5 major GPA. Individual research and honors essay under direction of a department member are required.

MINOR

The Africana, Puerto Rican and Latino Studies minor consists of 12 credits chosen from Africana, Puerto Rican and Latino Studies.

To fulfill the minor requirements, 6 credits must be taken at the 100/200 level, with an additional 6 taken at the 300 level.
