Introduction

We believe that a change of location can change perspective, and change your life. This year-long Capstone Program in Taipei, Taiwan at National Chengchi University offers unparalleled and unique opportunities for Capstone students to immerse themselves in academic and professional environments.

The program provides immersive training in Chinese language and culture. Students will attend classes alongside Taiwanese peers, and develop expertise in their field of study. This opportunity provides students with a chance to make lasting friendships and gain the skills necessary to become impressive global professionals.

The Growing Importance of Mandarin

Combining intensive language instruction and cultural immersion, The Language Flagship is a leader in educating U.S. undergraduate students in languages critical to U.S. National Security. Capstone students are outstanding American undergraduates, from 8 universities across the U.S., who excel in Mandarin, and who are often double majoring in Chinese and in another academic domain.

Having completed the rigorous domestic training with a variety of courses, programs, and extracurricular activities to ensure students gain exceptional proficiency in Mandarin Chinese, the Capstone Year is the final component in attaining superior professional fluency in Chinese.

Why Study Abroad in Taiwan

In 2021, the online InterNations Expat Insider survey ranked Taiwan 1st as the best designation for expats for the third year in a row, where not a single expat felt personally unsafe. An overwhelming rating of 96 percent of expats expressed that the Taiwanese people were friendly towards foreign residents.

In the 2022 UN-initiated World Happiness Report, Taiwan ranked first in East Asia and Southeast Asia in happiness, ahead of Singapore (27), Japan (54), South Korea (59), China (72), and Hong Kong (81), and ranked 26th in the world overall among 146 countries and territories.

Taiwan was ranked 7th among 63 economies in the 2022 IMD World Competitiveness Report. Taiwan was also placed in the top 4 for innovation capability–scoring higher than 137 economies–in the World Economic Forum’s 2019 report.

Taiwan is also a vibrant democracy, where freedom, rule of law, and human rights are all fostered and protected. In Freedom House’s 2023 Survey of Global Freedom, Taiwan received a high score of 94 out of 100 for freedom, making it tied for 7th place out of 210 countries in the world.

Who is Eligible to Apply?

Students attending the Capstone Year must be enrolled in one of the U.S. Chinese Flagship Programs. Other qualification criteria include: academic performance, linguistic skills, course requirements, as well as a personal statement that includes a study plan for the Capstone year. Please consult the Chinese Flagship program at your home institution for details.
