About

Versatile Degrees

The Department of Economics & Accounting includes both an economics and accounting program, each designed to teach students essential adaptive-learning strategies and problem-solving skills needed to succeed in today's competitive business world.

ABOUT OUR DEPARTMENT

The Department of Economics & Accounting at Hunter College teaches students how to interpret information, evaluate alternative courses of action and analyze resources. Economics students also learn about the institutions and rules that shape daily life—the monetary system, the stock and bond markets and the regulatory system. Students studying accounting focus on how to measure, report and interpret the financial aspects and transactions of businesses, governments and other institutions, thus providing the information necessary to determine and evaluate both present and projected economic activities of organizations.

"Economics is a unique social science that makes you think about society and everyday interactions in a whole new light."

Dr. Partha Deb, Chair of the Department of Economics & Accounting

The Hunter Advantage

Our Degree

Economists and accountants are highly employable, with skills that are valued in a wide range of industries. A degree in economics or accounting from Hunter College provides students with critical thinking skills that will be useful in almost any path taken after graduation. Here are some examples:

  • Economics degree: A degree in economics is especially valuable for students who plan careers in finance, management, law, journalism or public policy. Many professional economists also enter government at the federal, state or local levels, either in research or policy-making positions. Others are involved in teaching and research in colleges and universities.
  • Accounting degree: Our accounting graduates become auditors, budget analysts, actuaries, financial analysts, tax examiners, software developers and more. Some join the "Big 4" and other accounting firms, consulting firms, non-profit organizations and government agencies.
  • Certificate in Business Studies: Whether students hope to work for an established company or start-up, a medical practice or a museum, this certificate helps signal business-specific skills and knowledge to a wide range of potential employers.

Our Location

We offer students an opportunity to study in the financial capital of the world, while making important professional connections at leading organizations throughout New York City. Our students have secured internships at the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SED), as well as accounting firms like Ernst & Young. After graduation they have joined major financial firms, including Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley, and international organizations like the United Nations and the World Bank.

Our distinguished faculty, many of whom have extensive work experience and continue to sit on important advisory committees, are known for their professional and industry connections in New York City and throughout the U.S.
