Certificate in Business Studies

Certificate in Business Studies

Adding business “know-how” to the strengths of a liberal arts education

The Certificate in Business Studies, a 15-credit program housed in the Department of Economics and Accounting, consists of courses drawn from several departments and welcomes undergraduate students from any major/minor. While a liberal arts education is a strong foundation for many careers, many Hunter students want to supplement their major with a foundation in business and a credential signaling this to potential employers. The program covers fundamentals of business, economics, accounting, professional readiness, and more. It has a work experience requirement, and partners closely with the Cooperman Business Center and other Hunter careers resources to support students in finding qualifying internships.

The Certificate in Business Studies can be used to fulfill the Hunter Focus requirements.

Certificate in Business Studies FAQs
  • Just about every Hunter graduate will participate, one way or another, in business. Whether you work for an established company or a start-up, a medical practice or a museum, business skills are more necessary now than ever.
  • Hunter’s 15-credit Certificate in Business Studies builds on the critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving skills you’re developing in your liberal arts and science education. By including the certificate in your course of study, you will add a business-oriented mindset, along with theory and skills, to help you kick off your career.
  • Please consult with Advising and the Office of Financial Aid to understand how the certificate would work for your individual situation.
  • The Certificate in Business Studies will allow you to:
    • Understand the business mindset, and how different functions of a successful business operate and influence each other.
    • Apply the key ideas, vocabulary and skills needed to navigate successfully in today’s professional world to a range of business-related problems.
    • Demonstrate your ability to succeed in the professional business world, via a supervised internship or (coming later) the opportunity for a mentored entrepreneurial project.
  • Keep in mind that this certificate is not a BBA, and it does not count towards the economics or accounting majors.

The required core courses are:

  • Introduction to Economics (ECO 10000)
  • Survey of Accounting (BUS 22500)
  • Introduction to Entrepreneurship (BUS 26100)
  • Capstone in Business Studies (BUS 49700)

Plus one elective course from the following:

  • Technology & Data
    • Intro to Computer Science (CSCI 127)
    • Programming for Everyone (CSCI 133)
    • Economic Statistics (ECO 221)
    • Social Statistics (SOC 241)
    • Research Design in Political Science (POLSC 206)
    • Elementary Probability & Stats (STAT 113)
    • Introduction to Applied Statistics (STAT 213)
    • Quant. Approaches to Urban Analysis (URBS 311)
  • Marketing & Communication
    • Creating Value Through Marketing (BUS 210)
    • Reporting and Writing 1 (MEDPL 201)
    • Web Production 1 (MEDP 285)
    • Attitudes and Persuasion (PSYCH 332)
    • Consumer Behavior (SOC 313)
  • Management & Organizations
    • Business Org. & Management (ECO 259)
    • Industrial & Org. Psychology (PSYCH 340)
    • Essentials of Business Law ( BUS 230)

Permission may be granted for other business-related classes on a case-by-case basis.

Note: Courses will still be counted towards the Certificate even if taken before joining the program.

  • Work experience is an essential component of the Certificate in Business Studies. The capstone course (despite its name) can be taken before you complete the other required courses. The course only runs in Spring and Summer semesters, so please notify the Business Certificate team early in the semester before you want to take this class. This will allow us to guide you and support you in finding a suitable internship or equivalent position.
  • To enroll in the Capstone course, you must have an offer in hand for an approved internship in a business-oriented position.  You may also need to complete certain workshops provided by Hunter as prerequisites.
  • The Capstone course runs in tandem with your internship, with regular course meetings. These sessions will support you in making the connections between theory and practice, helping you to exceed expectations in your role and setting you up for success.
  • Please reach out to us at buscert@hunter.cuny.edu with any questions, or to set up some time to meet.
  • We hold an online information session near the beginning of each semester. Please complete the Interest Form above so we can let you know about our next one.
  • You are also welcome to come by our weekly drop-in office hours during the regular semester.
  • If you are interested in a career in a business-related field, the Cooperman Business Center provides guidance, resources and networking.
  • You may also want to connect with one or more of these student organizations:
