MA in Adolescent Education

MA - TEP in Adolescent Education Social Studies, Grades 7-12

Eligibility and Admission Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with a GPA of at least 3.0
  • A major of at least 30 credits in one of the areas of social studies (history, political science, geography, or economics) with a GPA of 3.0, including at least 12 credits in history, 3 credits in geography, 3 credits in political science, and 3 credits in economics. The coursework in history must include at least one course in each of the following areas: U.S. history, European history, and world or non-Western history.
    • Applicants are encouraged to upload history course syllabi or descriptions to their application.
  • A general education core in the liberal arts and sciences to include: artistic expression, communication, information retrieval, concepts in history and social sciences, humanities, a world language other than English, scientific and mathematical processes, and written analysis and expression (Waived for Spring 2025 and Fall 2025 applicants)
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • A statement of purpose
  • An official Graduate Record Examination (GRE) score report (Waived for Spring 2025 and Fall 2025 applicants)

Master's Degree Requirements

  • 15 credits of History including 3 credits in each of the following areas: United States History, European History, World/Non-Western history, Gender, Diversity in the United States. Student’s undergraduate records will be reviewed at the time of application to determine if any of these domains can be fulfilled. Fulfillment may be considered with at least 6 credits in a domain, 200-level or above, with a B or better. For further information about domain fulfillment, please contact Professor Karen Kern, kkern@hunter.cuny.edu. (Please review this list for course offerings/domains currently offered in the History Department.)
  • 3 credits in geography, selected from the following: GEOG 701 (Geographic Thought and Theory), GEOG 705 (Cultural and Social Geography), GEOG 706 (Latin Americanist Geography), GEOG 709 (Geography of Selected World Regions), GEOG 712 (Sustainable Development in Developing Countries), GEOG 713 (Rural Water Supply in Developing Countries), GEOG 741 (Population Geography), GEOG 742 (International Migration and Ethnicity), or a graduate-level special topics seminar with permission of an advisor.
  • A sequence of course work, field experience, and a culminating experience in teacher education. Consult with the Office of Educational Services (Room HW 1000) or refer to the School of Education section of the graduate catalogue for specific information concerning these requirements.
