Graduate Academics

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers a choice of three MA programs, all focusing in various aspects of mathematics and statistics.

In addition to the three MA programs, the department offers two BA/MA programs.

  • Master of Arts in Pure Mathematics
  • Master of Arts in Statistics and Applied Mathematics
  • Mathematics or Statistics and Applied Mathematics BA/MA
  • Teacher Education Programs in Adolescent Mathematics (Grades 7-12)

Master of Arts in Pure Mathematics

The Master of Arts in Pure Mathematics is a 30-credit degree program. The coursework largely mirrors the first two years of a doctoral program in mathematics. Achievement of the degree includes a comprehensive examination. In addition students must show reading competency in a foreign language.

The general college admission requirements must be satisfied. These include the Graduate Record Examination and two letters of recommendation. The department’s requirements are flexible. They are intended to encourage students without a prior specialization in mathematics to pursue a degree in mathematics.

Master of Arts in Statistics and Applied Mathematics

The Master of Arts Program in Statistics and Applied Mathematics is intended for students interested in applications to business, science, engineering, industry, biology and medicine, as well as teaching and research. This is a 30-credit degree program.

There are five tracks: Statistics is Track I, Applied Mathematics is Track II, Biostatistics is Track III, Mathematical Finance is Track IV, and Statistical Data Science is Track V.

Achievement of the degree requires a final project as well as working knowledge of two computer languages. The final projects provide the student with the opportunity to investigate a problem whose outcome is not previously known. Our faculty mentor the projects.

The general college admission requirements must be satisfied. These include two letters of recommendation. In addition, the department requires one semester of Linear Algebra (MATH 260) and one semester of Multivariate Calculus (MATH 250). The department’s requirements are minimal. They are intended to encourage students without a previous specialization in mathematics to pursue a degree in statistics and applied mathematics.

Mathematics or Statistics and Applied Mathematics BA/MA

The BA/MA program offers promising students the opportunity to complete both the bachelor’s and master’s degree requirements with a minimum of 120 credits. Requirements are the same as those for a major in the department, plus 30 credits at the graduate level. Interested students should contact the appropriate graduate advisor for further information regarding eligibility and curriculum requirements.

Option 1: BA/MA in Mathematics

Students complete the BA with a standard mathematics major, with 30 additional credits at the graduate level in mathematics following the Master of Arts in Pure Mathematics. Choice of courses are approved by the departmental graduate advisor.

Option 2: BA/MA Program in Statistics and Applied Mathematics

Students complete the BA with a standard major in statistics or mathematics, with 30 additional credits at the graduate level in Statistics and Mathematics, following the sequence of courses for one of the five available tracks: Statistics is Track I, Applied Mathematics is Track II, Biostatistics is Track III, Mathematical Finance is Track IV, and Statistical Data Science is Track V. The final choice of courses for each student is approved by the appropriate departmental graduate advisor. Students in Option 2 must complete a faculty supervised project.

Teacher Education Programs in Adolescent Mathematics (Grades 7-12)

This is a 41- to 42-credit MA program designed for individuals who completed an undergraduate major in mathematics but have little or no background in teacher education. The program is offered in collaboration with the School of Education and leads to New York State initial certification.Three graduate programs are available: an MA in adolescent mathematics education, an Advanced Certificate in mathematics, and Professional Certification in mathematics education.

A. Master of Arts in Adolescent Mathematics Education

This is a 41- to 42-credit MA program designed for individuals who completed an undergraduate major in mathematics but have little or no background in teacher education. The program is offered in collaboration with the School of Education and leads to New York State initial certification.

B. Advanced Certificate in Mathematics

The School of Education offers an Advanced Certificate Program in Mathematics Education that leads to initial certification. This program is designed for individuals who already have a master’s degree in mathematics, but who need the appropriate pedagogical preparation for teaching mathematics in grades 7-12.

For more information, visit the School of Education website.

C. Professional Certification in Mathematics Education

This master’s degree in mathematics education is designed for teachers who already hold New York State certification in mathematics 7-12.
