Admission Requirements

Admission to the Medical Laboratory Sciences Program is competitive. At present, about 25 students are admitted in the fall and spring semesters (total of about 50 annually). Since more eligible students apply than can be admitted, no one is guaranteed a seat in the program. To be eligible a student must have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5. However, in recent semesters the average GPA of admitted students has been 3.3.

  • One year of General Chemistry for science majors with lab and grade of at least C (Equivalent to Hunter College courses: CHEM 102 and CHEM 104/CHEM 105 or CHEM 106).
    • Note: this requirement cannot be substituted by Chemistry for non-science majors, such as CHEM 100/101 and/or CHEM 120/121 or their equivalent)
  • One year of General Biology for science majors with lab and grade of at least C (Equivalent to Hunter College Courses: BIO 100 and 102).
    • Note: this requirement cannot be substituted by Anatomy and Physiology (BIO 120/122 or their equivalent).*
  • Students must have at least 60 credits
  • 2.5 minimum GPA is required

*Please note: Students may be in the process of taking one of the general biology or chemistry prerequisites listed above at the time of application. For example, a student would be eligible to apply if he/she has completed CHEM 102-4-6 and BIO 100 and is in the process of taking BIO 102 (or at least be officially registered for the course) at the time of application. A student would not be eligible to apply if he/she has completed CHEM 102-4-6 and is in the process of taking BIO 100. Students accepted into the program must complete BIO 100/102 and CHEM 102-4-6 with grades of at least C in all before they can take any MLS courses.

If you studied or intend to study General Chemistry and Biology at a CUNY 2 year college, check the guide to equivalent courses (see “transferring credit”) to be sure you are taking the correct classes. If outside CUNY, take classes designated for biomedical science majors, i.e. the most rigorous ones you can find.

How to Apply

To apply to the Medical Laboratory Sciences Program both transfer and current Hunter students must complete a Transfer Application with the CUNY University Application Processing Center.

Admissions take place on a rolling basis so apply as early as possible. Admission deadlines and requirements are shown below. To apply, click here and log in or create a CUNY Portal ID in order to access the online application. Be sure to select "Medical Laboratory Sciences" at Hunter College as your choice of curriculum.

Important Application Information

CUNY Curriculum code: 0344
Fall application deadline: February 1st
Spring application deadline: September 15

If you need assistance with the application process, contact Hunter College Admissions at 212-772-4490 or visit their website here. You may also email Dr. Shahana Mahajan (smahajan@hunter.cuny.edu) or Dr. Steven Einheber (seinhebe@hunter.cuny.edu) to review your record and give you advice about preparing to enter the program.

Once accepted to the program, students will receive a letter from UAPC. New Students must attend course registration/advising sessions prior to the start of their first semester.

Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance into the program, which is based, by necessity, on the limitations of space and resources. The Hunter College Medical Lab Sciences Program is dedicated to equal opportunity for all applicants who meet admission requirements.

Transferring Credit

To see course equivalencies between your CUNY college credits and Hunter College, you may use the CUNY Transfer Explorer. Currently enrolled CUNY Students may also use the Transfer What If tool available in Degreeworks.

College courses taken elsewhere may meet entrance conditions but may not necessarily have Hunter equivalents that satisfy degree requirements. Credit values for courses taken elsewhere need not be equal to Hunter courses. You may email Dr. Steven Einheber (seinhebe@hunter.cuny.edu) to review your record and give you advice about preparing to enter the program. However, please note that the Official Evaluation of transfer credits is done through the Office of Admissions, NOT the Medical Laboratory Sciences Department.

Note: All transfer credit must be given Hunter equivalents by academic departments or the initial Admissions Office evaluation, except for courses used as "Open Electives". Check with Admissions or Academic Advising to determine the status of all courses taken at other colleges or universities. The student alone cannot decide the final status of his or her transfer credits or equivalents.

Proof in writing is the determining factor in all cases of appeal.
