Course Description
This course introduces students to the most significant theoretical and historical developments of queer theory across various geographical locales known as the Global South. We will examine how a renewed engagement with geopolitics and transnationalism has diversified queer theory’s Euro-American holdings to include untapped regions of South Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East, challenging the use of ‘queer’ as a homogenising global entity. The course draws on canonical and recent theoretical texts, films, and documentaries that will introduce students to Non-Euro-American accounts of gender and sexuality amidst broader issues such as global capitalism, nationalism, post-colonialism, diaspora, and migration.
