Paolo Nino Valdez is a Fulbright Fellow in the English Department at Hunter College in Fall 2022. He is an Associate Professor in the Department of English and Applied Linguistics, De La Salle University, Manila, Philippines. He holds a PhD in linguistics from the Philippine Normal University, and his dissertation that delves into culture and code-switching was a finalist for the Christopher Brumfit Outstanding Dissertation Award in 2008. His research interests are in the areas of linguistic landscapes, teacher beliefs, and critical pedagogy. His publications have appeared in Discourse, Context and Media, Asia Pacific Education Researcher, Journal of AsiaTEFL, TESL-EJ, Reflective Practice and MEXTESOL Journal. He currently serves as an editor of the Malaysian Journal of ELT research. In 2017, he was a visiting scholar at the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. As a research fellow under the Fulbright Foundation, he will work on commodity registers and linguistic landscapes in the Philippine-American Community in New York in Fall 2022. As an avid long-distance cyclist/bike commuter, he advocates for inclusive mobility.
