The Hunter College Sustainability Council (HCSC) was established in 2007 to guide and coordinate Hunter College's efforts to become "greener" and engage in more sustainable practices.

Comprised of a diverse group of students, faculty and staff, HCSC meets monthly and focuses primarily on eight key areas of concern:

  • Energy, efficiency and operations
  • Curriculum and faculty development
  • Student involvement, procurement and dining
  • Fleet and transportation
  • Waste and recycling
  • Communication
  • Professional development

Our Challenge

The Hunter College Sustainability Council (HCSC) was formed in response to the mayoral administration's 30 in 10 Challenge in 2007, which inspired nine New York City universities—including all CUNY schools—to pledge to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by 30% within 10 years. This challenge has given Hunter's Sustainability Council the impetus, authority and support structure to create a 10-Year Sustainability Plan unique to our campus.

Since then, NYC has commissioned the new 80 x 50 imperative to reduce city-wide greenhouse gas emissions 80 percent by the year 2050. The city's Roadmap to 80 x 50 outlines a pathway to success for achieving this goal and Hunter's Sustainability Council works hard with CUNY to implement key reduction strategies and processes to do our part for the city imperative. Learn more about the goals, targets and progress toward 80 x 50 on the NYC Mayor's Office of Sustainability website.

Care for the Future

Taking a cue from the Hunter College motto—Mihi Cura Futuri—"The Care of the Future is Mine"—the HCSC aims to raise awareness about sustainability issues, promote participation in ecologically-friendly practices within the Hunter community and in our greater urban setting, and facilitate greater efficiency of campus operations.
