Our focus on procurement includes efforts to increase usage of green products in the office, classroom and building materials, and to encourage adoption of a paperless procurement process.
Procurement
Actions and Activities
Following procurement guidelines and specifications verified by State Executive Order 4, Hunter College purchases foam soap, recycled copy paper, brown paper towels and Energy Star devices—products which all mitigate pollutants and improve public health, lower carbon footprint and have a reduced life-cycle intensity.
Hunter’s Office of Facilities Management purchases and uses cleaning products and solvents that are gentler on the environment and are Green Seal certified. To achieve this certification, products must meet strict environmental standards for their reduced toxicity to air and water. Read more about Green Seal certification.
Expectations
Our expectations to go further and greener include these procurement goals from our Sustainability Plan:
- Creation of a comprehensive commodity “product map” surveying and listing opportunities for the college to purchase green in other commodity areas.
- Organization of an education and training tips sheet on green procurement practices.
- Raise the green product procurement baseline to comprise 28% of the college expenses on goods and services by year 2028.
