Cultivating Cultural Competence: Understanding the Cultural Difference Between the US and East Asian Countries in the Workplace

Professor Holly Chiu was born and raised in Taiwan. Before entering academia, she worked for many years in a variety of roles in the Taiwan industrial sector. She moved to the US in 2006, received her PhD in Organizational Management from Rutgers Business School, and is now an Associate Professor in the Department of Management, Marketing and Entrepreneurship at Brooklyn College. Her classes focus on understanding individual differences in terms of personalities, values, motivations etc. and this includes cultural differences. With her academic training and extensive working experience both in Taiwan and in the US, Professor Chiu will examine theories that seek to explain the impact of cultural differences on the workplace, using real-world examples to help students gain a better understanding.
