As COVID-19 continues to blaze a path across the world, policy experts are considering the lasting economic ramifications of the virus and assessing how countries are going to be able to respond to an increasing likelihood of a protracted global recession. From the United States’ $2 trillion bailout to the suspension of mortgage payments in Italy, Germany and the U.K., among other measures, governments face the difficult task of balancing the very real needs of their citizens while maintaining corporate productivity in the midst of frayed safety nets. Our conversation will be co-moderated by Shyama Venkateswar, Director, Public Policy Program at Hunter College, and Karna Basu, Associate Professor of Economics at Hunter College and The Graduate Center and feature speakers: Mark Levinson, Chief Economist for The Service Employees International Union (SEIU),James Parrott, Director of Economic and Fiscal Policies at the Center for New York Affairs at The New School, and Sangeeta Pratap, Associate Professor of Economics at Hunter College and The Graduate Center. The panel discussion, followed by Q&A, will address the broad economic implications of the current pandemic and the bailout plan, the fallout from a contracted global economy, the proposed infrastructure bill, and other larger changes needed to withstand future economic shocks of this magnitude.
