Federal aid consist of grants and loans. Loans have to be repaid with interest but not until 6 months after a student graduates from college. While an individual is a full-time student they will not have to pay back the loans. Filling out this application can also qualify you for private grants and scholarships and federal work-study. Scholarships and Grants
Scholarships and grants are monies given to students that do not have to be repaid. They can vary greatly in amount and there are many different application processes. There are merit scholarships, which are based on a students academic success, and need based scholarships, which are based on a students financial need. Work-Study
Federal work-study provides payment for part-time jobs for undergraduate students with financial need. The pay is hourly and only applies to jobs listed through the work-study office of the college that the student is attending. Students are paid minimum wage, or more, dependent upon the type of job. Schools must pay students directly at least once a month. The total amount you can earn cannot exceed the amount that you have been awarded for the year. Your employer or supervisor will take this, your class schedule, and academic progress into consideration when creating your work schedule. Jobs will generally be related to your field of study but not always.
