Center Resources

The Center’s resources to facilitate faculty and student research include:

Faculty and Staff

  • An associate dean for research to guide individual and group faculty research
  • A grants assistant who helps faculty with developing grant budgets as well as preparing and submitting proposals
  • External consultants to assist with project proposals, data analysis, and manuscript preparation

Member of Weill Cornell Medicine Clinical and Translational Science Center (CTSC). SON, as a consortium member, collaborates with the multi-institutional consortium to move translational research from bench to bedside and to the community. Faculty receive updates of all workshops and other resources (e.g. mock grant review).

  • SON faculty represented on CTSC committees: Multidisciplinary Inter-Institutional Program Advisory Committee (MIAC), Clinical and Translational Education Program (CTEP), Education Advisory Board, Review Panel for Planning a Community Health Research Project Grants, and the KL2 & TL1 Scholar Award Selection Committee
  • Encourage monthly participation in national network of nurse researchers (announced at monthly faculty meeting) involved in clinical translational centers (NINR Nurse Scientist Translational Research Interest Group)

Grants for one-year pilot funds supported by the CTSC.

  • Pilot award seed grants for research projects proposals with potential to lead to external funding, $25,000 (1 funded/year)
  • Community engagement projects, which must include a community partner, $5,000-$10,000 (1 or 2 funded/year)

A dedicated CNR Blackboard site available to all full-time faculty that posts resources (grant announcements, grant boilerplates, links to internal research offices and external sources for funding). A bulletin board outside the CNR director’s office also highlights current resources and conference announcements.

Monthly CNR updates to faculty at monthly faculty meeting highlighting faculty accomplishments, new grant opportunities, and resources that are posted on Blackboard. CNR director encourages faculty participation at Hunter College and Cornell Medical research workshops and presentations. Presentations are also posted on the CNR Blackboard site.

Facilitate collaboration among SON faculty and other Hunter College and CTSC member faculty.

  • Include 15 minutes at each monthly faculty meeting for a “Research Sharing Point” – faculty present a brief description of their current projects/interests
  • Work with Hunter College Office of Research Administration and provost’s office to identify and connect faculty with similar research interests at Hunter College
  • Work with CTSC research support team to identify and connect faculty with similar research interests at Weill-Cornell Medical College, MSKKCC, Hospital for Special Surgery and Cornell University
  • Facilitate groups of faculty to work together (e.g. Women’s Health Research Interest Group)

Assistant professor meetings with the dean and CNR director occur 3 to 4 times/semester and include topics such as describing promotion and tenure standards/process, examples of programs of research, grant-writing tips, and how to develop an individual development plan. All presentations and resources from these meetings are posted on CNR Blackboard site.

External consultants for faculty – individual requests are paid from CTSC and the Office of the Dean’s funds.

  • Statistical consultants
  • Expert proposal and manuscript reviewers
    • CNR director or faculty identify content and/or methodological experts to provide critique for specific projects
  • Since October 2017, a research consultant with extensive NIH funding (Office of the Dean funds) is available to provide intensive support of assistant professors and those faculty submitting grants to NIH.
  • Editors

A dedicated conference room (W405) that houses a host of multimedia tools including a large flat screen HDTV, a computer, a DVD/VHS system, a high-speed scanner, conference calling and multiple video/web conferencing platforms. This room is used for meetings as well as data collection (focus groups and individual research participant meetings).

A dedicated research lab for faculty and research assistants with 8 computer stations, and a scanner/printer (West Mezzanine) that provides:

  • Office Productivity & Document Creation: Acasi, Adobe CS6 Master Collection (After Effects, Audition, Bridge, Dreamweaver, Encore, ExtendScript, Fireworks, Illustrator, InDesign, Media Encoder, Photoshop, Prelude, Premiere Pro), Microsoft Office Professional (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, InfoPath Designer, InfoPath Filler, OneNote, Outlook, Publisher, SharePoint), PDF creation/editing tools, Presto Page Manager 7—Document Management and Sharing Software, QuickTime, and SYSTRAN Premium Language Translation Software
  • Data Analysis: SPSS, Power and Precision Power Analysis Software, QSR Nvivo Qualitative Research Software, R: Language and Environment for Statistical Computing and Graphics, RR Console Statistical Computing Program, SAS, and StataIC

Student Involvement in Research

  • Student research assistantships (work-study) provide help for faculty and give students the opportunity to participate in the research process. The SON grants assistant coordinates these research positions with SON faculty (paid by CTSC funds).
  • Evidence-Based Practice Poster Day: This annual event provides an excellent opportunity for students (and faculty) from both the SON and the School of Health Professions (Departments of Speech-Language Pathology & Audiology and Physical Therapy) to display their research.
  • ENRS: All junior honors students attend, and selected students present their work during a student poster session at the annual Eastern Nursing Research Society scientific meeting. See www.enrs-go.org for more information.
