Training
Human Subjects Research
All Principal Investigators (PIs) and research personnel must demonstrate training in Human Subjects Research (HSR) through completion of the CITI Program Human Subjects - Basic training or refresher course. Please note that there are several courses available depending on your position within CUNY and the type of research you may be conducting. Please ensure that you complete one of the following as it best fits your position and research:
- HSR for Undergraduate Students
- HSR for Social & Behavioral Faculty, Graduate Students & Postdoctoral Scholars
- HSR for Biomedical Faculty, Graduate Students & Postdoctoral Scholars
This training must appear in IRBManager by linking your account to your CITI Program account using your campus email address, not your CUNYFirst or personal email address. Instructions for linking CITI Human Subjects Research may be found under 'Notices' on your Dashboard in IRBManager. Refresher training is required every three years.
Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR)
CUNY requires training in the responsible conduct of research by all researchers. Instructions on completing training through the CITI Program can be found here. In addition, research funded by departments such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and National Science Foundation (NSF) have specific requirements regarding training in responsible conduct of research. Please note that this training is separate from human subjects training required for submissions to the Institutional Review Board (IRB).
If you are a CUNY faculty member, staff member, postdoctoral scholar, graduate student, or undergraduate student involved in research at Hunter College, then you are required to complete the CITI training within six weeks of initiating your research. CUNY researchers are required to take a refresher training course every four years. Please take the time to review the policy on training in the responsible conduct of research to ensure that you are compliant with both the institution's and your funder's policies. Please submit your Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) CITI certificate via this form.
Conflict of Interest (COI)
In addition to HSR and RCR training, investigators may need to complete CITI training in Conflict of Interest (COI) if they are 1) conducting Public Health Service (PHS) funded research or 2) if requested by a CUNY College Conflicts Officer (CCO) or the CUNY Conflicts Committee. Training must be provided to both your CCO and your College Grants Officer with any proposal for funding.
COI training certificate will be valid for four years. CUNY researchers are required to re-take the CITI COI training course every four years.
