Graduate Academics

The Hunter College Master of Arts in Translation and Interpreting (MATI) program offers a curriculum that includes both a theoretical grounding in translation and interpreting studies, and hands-on language-specific training in translation, localization and oral interpretation skills in Chinese, Russian and Spanish, and additionally the top 10 internet-user languages. To date, our program has served students in Chinese, Russian, and Spanish in the main and as well, in Arabic, Korean, Hebrew, and Ukrainian, paired with English. For more information, please contact the program director at jt3361@hunter.cuny.edu.

Translation and Interpreting - MA

The Masters in Translation and Interpreting is two-year curriculum for full-time students that may be completed within five years on a part-time basis. Language specific courses in translation prepare students to handle a wide range of texts and genres, from literary works, academic papers and press releases, to research reports and financial documents, as well as new media formats, including film, podcasts, websites and blog content. Interpretation courses provide students with practical training in consecutive, conference and community oral interpreting and sight translation, simulating a variety of social service, education and healthcare settings. Coursework also includes foundational studies in machine translation technologies, software localization and terminology management systems.

MATI offers three (3) language-specific tracks for the degree:

  • MA in Translation and Interpreting - Chinese
  • MA in Translation and Interpreting - Russian
  • MA in Translation and Interpreting - Spanish

Program Learning Outcomes (PLO)

Upon completion of the Hunter MATI program, students will be able to:

  • Apply knowledge of theoretical and ethical aspects of translation and interpreting work while working in various capacities within the language services industry.
  • Plan, manage, and execute group translation projects using WordFast, MemoQ and Trados, and similar computer-assisted translation tools, which includes coordination with a project manager.
  • Provide written bi-directional translation of text and multimedia documents in key client sectors including medicine, general business, law, NGO administration, finance, education, etc.
  • Execute various forms of professional interpreting tasks while demonstrating an understanding of cultural and non-linguistic aspects of communication.
  • Pursue professional careers in translation and interpreting in different professional sectors, including city and state offices, hospitals, courts, and local non-governmental and private organizations.
