Professional Experience
Qualified students wishing to pursue careers in the diagnostic laboratory are encouraged to participate in the Professional Practice internship course after one year in MLS. Students are assigned to clinical laboratories of their choice, such as Hematology, Microbiology, Chemistry, etc. at one of our hospital affiliates. Participation in the practicum can begin the required period of practical experience necessary for NY State licensure as a medical technologist.
Good news! Licensure for Clinical Laboratory personnel was made a NYS law in January 2005, and became effective September 1, 2006. The MLS faculty has long advocated for this legislation to enhance the professional status of clinical technologists, as well as improve patient care. The role of the healthcare workers union, Local 1199/SEIU in this process is greatly appreciated. To read the text of the law, ART 165 of the Education Act, as well as learn the requirements and process for obtaining licensure, visit the following link: http://www.op.nysed.gov/prof/clt/
Research Practicum Students demonstrating the interest and aptitude to pursue research careers may participate in laboratory investigations of the faculty and outside mentors through Independent Study and Honors courses. Projects are varied and represent active areas in biomedical research. The program provides our students with assistance in planning future education and career paths, including graduate and professional schools. Several special honors and awards (such as the Naughton research scholarship) are available to assist students who participate in independent research projects.
