Information Alert October 2024

NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH (NIH) UPDATES

Changes to Data Management and Sharing (DMS) Plan Progress Reporting and the Submission of Revised DMS Plans

On October 1, NIH is adding several new Data Management and Sharing (DMS) questions to Research Performance Progress Reports (RPPRs) and updating the process for submitting revised DMS Plans to NIH for review.

NIH is also updating the processes for submitting requests to revise a DMS Plan through the Just in Time (JIT) Module, the Prior Approval Module, and the RPPR Module in eRA Commons (See Guide Notice NOT-OD-24-176).

Changes to NIH Biographical Sketch and Current and Pending Support Documents

Beginning on May 25, 2025, NIH will require grant applicants and recipients to use Common Forms for Biographical Sketch and Current and Pending (Other) Support, rather than the NIH-specific format pages currently in use.

This change serves a broader goal of aligning disclosure requirements across federal research agencies.

The common forms do not require certain elements that NIH currently does--specifically the Personal Statement, Contributions to Science, and Honors fields--so NIH will also create a new Biographical Sketch Supplement to collect those details.

The Science Experts Network Curriculum (SciENcv) web platform must be used to complete the Common Forms and the NIH biographical sketch supplement.

An ORCID ID must also be provided in the persistent identifier section of the Common Form and linked to a Senior/Key Personnel’s eRA Commons Personal Profile. ORCID IDs are unique identifiers that help streamline biological sketch development and allow better tracking of the professional accomplishments of the NIH-supported researchers. Please visit the NIH Common Forms website for additional information.
