Giving Tuesday logo

On December 1, Giving Tuesday, 822 donors gave over $309,000 to Hunter College—making Hunter the #1 CUNY college in both dollars raised and the number of donors—for the 4th year in a row!

Thank you to all who made this year’s Giving Tuesday at Hunter a tremendous success! You, our loyal alumni, who give at all times of the year and make every day a “Giving Tuesday,” continue to inspire us. In 2020, the pandemic brought sharply increased costs and a strain in public funding, but you have been helping us bridge that funding gap all year long. In light of this, we will keep the Giving Tuesday website open. Visit the page to see if we can break 1,000 donors, and please participate if you can.

Student Spotlight

The Daily Beast recently published an article about Deaf Broadway, a long-overdue initiative founded by actor, director, and Hunter playwriting student Garrett Zuercher, MFA ’22. Deaf Broadway aims to make musical theater more accessible for all. Read the article to learn more about Deaf Broadway.

It’s not too late to view the 2019 Hunter MFA Thesis Exhibition, hosted online by Hauser & Wirth and on view until December 12. The exhibition unfolds in four thematic groups, ”Gravity Spell,” ”Thresholds,” ”Interstices,” and ”Save the Last Dance,” highlighting the students’ diverse approaches to medium, technique, and subject matter. These groups of works are accompanied by interviews with Joachim Pissarro, the Bershad Professor of Art History and Director of the Hunter College Galleries, and Carrie Moyer, Director of the MFA Program in Studio Art. The presentation also includes photographs and videos that further illuminate each student’s vision and working process.

The works of five of the artists are also available for in-person viewing (by appointment—email in advance) at our 205 Hudson Gallery, also through December 12.

Alumni Highlights

Join us in congratulating Malika Savell ’06, who was recently named Chief Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Officer for North America by the Italian luxury fashion house Prada. Malika will be responsible for developing policies that ensure a diverse representation of cultures and perspectives across the company. We are so proud that her life and work reflect Hunter’s treasured motto, Mihi Cura Futuri, The Care of the Future Is Mine. Read more about Malika’s responsibilities and goals in her new position.

Archaeologist Alyssa Loorya '98, Co-Founder and President of Chrysalis Archaeology, spent a decade leading a team that excavated a 300-year-old farmhouse in Brooklyn. Their discoveries offer fascinating insights into life in 18th-century New York City. Hear more about this amazing project in a recent “TED Radio Hour” episode.

Earlier this year, New Yorker staff writer Vinson Cunningham ’14 wrote a reflective piece on New York City’s Prep for Prep educational program, which helps low-income students of color prepare for admission to selective private high schools. The article included a look back at his own positive experience in Prep for Prep, but pondered whether such programs obscure the educational system’s deeper inequalities. He also recounts, with much gratitude and fondness, his college days: “At Hunter, what I learned, I learned well.” Read the article.
