Dr. Maya Clark-Cutaia

Hunter College has named urban healthcare leader Dr. Maya Clark-Cutaia as the inaugural Evelyn Lauder Associate Dean for Nurse Practitioner Programs, Hunter Nursing School Dean Ann Marie Mauro announced.

The Lauder Associate Dean will oversee the new Evelyn Lauder Community Care Nurse Practitioner Program, which launched in August and now encompasses 33 fellows who are specializing in Adult/Gerontology or Psychiatric/Mental Health.

The program — a partnership with New York Health + Hospitals, the nation’s largest municipal health system — will provide a pipeline of highly educated nurse practitioners to the city’s neediest communities, including homeless and mentally ill populations.

“We are pleased to be able to draw on the extensive experience and expertise of Dr. Clark-Cutaia as we train the frontline of nurse practitioners to deliver healthcare in the most underserved areas,” Hunter College President Ann Kirschner said. “Dr. Clark-Cutaia is the one to get it done.”

Dr. Clark-Cutaia is an acute-care nurse practitioner with more than 15 years of experience in inpatient and outpatient settings and practice in the fields of urology, general surgery, colorectal surgery, and otorhinolaryngology.

She now serves as an assistant professor of Nursing and Medicine at New York University (NYU) Rory Meyers College of Nursing and NYU Grossman School of Medicine and an adjunct assistant professor of Nursing at University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. She is also a Betty Irene Moore Fellow for Nurse Leaders and Innovators, a national program run by UC-Davis.

Dr. Clark-Cutaia has secured more than $1.28 million in funding from the National Institute of Nursing, National Institute of Minority Health and Health Disparities, and Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation to conduct research on health equity and the effect of structural racism and other barriers to healthcare delivery among minority populations.

She earned her BS and MS in Nursing from the University of Pennsylvania, and her PhD in Nursing from the University of Pittsburgh. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing on Vulnerable Women, Children and Families. She also is an Air Force veteran, having earned the rank of Major (Select) USAFR, where she was a community health nurse and flight nurse.

Dr. Clark-Cutaia will join Hunter on January 22, 2024.

About the Evelyn Lauder Community Care Nurse Practitioner Program

The Evelyn Lauder Community Care Nurse Practitioner Program at the Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing was created in 2022 by a generous gift from Leonard A. Lauder in honor of his late wife, Evelyn Lauder, a proud Hunter College High School and Hunter College alumna. The gift expands Hunter’s graduate-level Program for Nurse Practitioners, preparing nurses for 21st-century practice and advancing health and health equity in New York City. The Evelyn Lauder Community Care Nurse Practitioner Program offers advanced clinical training and graduate-level education focused on the critical aspects of care, from diagnosis to ordering and interpreting tests to prescribing medication.
