The Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing today announced its third annual cohort of Evelyn H. Lauder Community Care Nurse Practitioner Fellows, on what would have been Evelyn Lauder’s 88th birthday. The 22 new Lauder Fellows will receive advanced clinical training and graduate-level education with comprehensive financial aid, giving them the skills, experience, and support that will allow them to drive the future of healthcare in New York City and beyond.

Established with a generous $52-million gift from Leonard A. Lauder in honor of his late wife, an alumna of Hunter College and Hunter College High School, the Evelyn Lauder Community Care Nurse Practitioner Program awards nurse practitioner students up to $30,000 in stipends for tuition and living expenses. In collaboration with NYC Health + Hospitals (H+H), the program also establishes direct employment pathways, empowering fellows to advance health equity and make an immediate impact on New York City’s healthcare system.

Evelyn Lauder, who died in 2011, was a generous and engaged alumna, a successful business executive, and a humanitarian whose health-related philanthropy is world-renowned. In 1992, she turned to the fight against breast cancer, launching The Estée Lauder Companies Breast Cancer Campaign and co-creating the pink ribbon. A year later, in 1993, she founded the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) to prevent and cure breast cancer by advancing the world's most promising research. Since then, BCRF has become the largest private funder of breast cancer research in the world.

She also co-founded the Pink Ribbon campaign, now the worldwide symbol of breast health. Hunter inducted Evelyn into its Hall of Fame in 2002, awarded her an honorary doctorate in 2004, and honored her as a Distinguished Alumna of Hunter College High School in 2010.

“Welcoming this new cohort of fellows is an immense honor, especially as we navigate the current health crisis in New York City. The Lauder Fellowship offers a unique opportunity for these students to gain expertise in providing primary care to patients with complex health needs living in our communities,” said Dr. Ann Marie P. Mauro, Joan Hansen Grabe Dean of the Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing. “Their pursuit of degrees in adult gerontology and psychiatric mental health will undoubtedly enhance patient care and health outcomes after they graduate from their two-year program with us. It not only prepares the next generation of New York’s healthcare leaders but also inspires our students to uphold Evelyn Lauder’s legacy of compassion and dedication to others.”

With 22 Fellows in Cohort 3, the program has had a total of 55 Fellows since its establishment.
