A Hunter College professor traveled to Warsaw in late February to receive an award from the Polish Senate.
Professor Danuta Swiatek, who teaches in Hunter’s Polish Program, was one of the seven recipients of the Polish Senate Speaker’s Award. The annual competition recognizes outstanding journalistic contributions about Polish heritage and culture and draws entries from around the world.
“We are very proud that Prof. Swiatek has gotten the recognition she deserves with this important award,” said Małgorzata Pośpiech, assistant adjunct professor in the Polish Program. “She has been working not only teaching Polish and about Polish culture but also as a journalist writing about Polonia and the Polish diaspora not only in the United States but also around the world, making the Polish community more visible.”
Swiatek is a senior editor of the portal Dobra Szkoła Nowy Jork, which cultivates Polish language, history, and culture.
This year’s topic was “Polki poza Polską” — about Polish women who are promoting the Polish language in their countries of residence.
Swiatek’s entry, “Bez polskiego by uschła jak kwiat bez wody,” detailed the life of the director of Polish Theater Institute in New York City, Izabella Laskowska.
The award was presented by Deputy Senate Speaker Rafał Grupiński and was followed by a splendid reception attended by all the recipients.
