She melds knowledge of ancient history with administrative savvy.
Hunter College has promoted Geralyn Lederman to the post of assistant vice president for academic operations, Interim Provost Manoj Pardasani announced.
“Geralyn brings a wealth of experience and knowhow to the role of assistant vice president of academic operations,” Pardasani said. “We are grateful to that she accepted this leadership portfolio and are excited about the strengths she will bring to it.”
Lederman served as chief of staff of Hunter’s Office of the Provost from 2017 to 2024 and as a senior adviser to the president from 2014 to 2017. She assumed the new role, which gives her greater responsibility over personnel, budgets, hiring, tenure, and accreditation, on November 20.
Lederman’s promotion comes as Hunter, under the leadership of new President Nancy Cantor, is emphasizing it role as an anchor institution in New York City. One of the nation’s most diverse colleges, Hunter shares its high-impact research and educational and artistic amenities with a variety of local partners.
Lederman is well-positioned to champion this agenda. Before starting her career as an administrator, Lederman earned a doctorate in classical and Near Eastern archaeology from Bryn Mawr College. She earlier worked for nonprofits and public-relations agencies developing public-affairs programs on mental- and public-health issues. She taught ancient history and archaeology at New York, Fordham, and George Washington universities and Reed College.
“I’m excited to take on these new responsibilities and continue to contribute to the mission of Hunter and President Cantor’s vision of community engaged scholarship,” Lederman said.
