Office of Assessment November 2014 Newsletter

Assessing the Semester!

It's late November - time to take stock of how you think the semester went. Did your students learn what you wanted them to learn? How will your final assignments and exams show you one way or the other? Drop us a line or attend a workshop to get some advice from the Office of Assessment and your fellow faculty and staff.

Faculty Spotlight
Professors Jonathan Conning and Kenneth McLaughlin in the Economics Department are trying something innovative to help students in lower-level Economics courses. They are piloting a newly redesigned Economics Department Tutoring Center that is more responsive to student needs than traditional centers.

Linked data from online quizzes, clickers, and CUNYfirst will help Jonathan and Ken send targeted emails to students. Customized software will track students' tutoring participation and improvement over time on particular learning outcomes. This feedback will then inform their ongoing pedagogy. While the semester is not over yet, they are already seeing significant improvements and we look forward to hearing more!

Assessing General Education
This past Friday, faculty and staff from all over the state came to Hunter to talk about What Every College Graduate Should Know. The topic under discussion? The assessment of students' general education. Presenters offered a variety of methods and tools to discover what their college graduates were learning. Read more about the conference on the Office of Assessment blog!

While you're there, check out Lindsay Portnoy's latest post - "How do you know when you don't know?" - in which she explores the science of questioning.

Year-End Assessment Events
We hope you enjoyed the new series of Assessment Breakfasts this semester. We will offer one more on December 3, 9:30 - 11 in 1203E as an open workshop for you to bring your assessment challenges.

Please let us know in our quick survey if you'd like us to repeat topics from this semester or add new ones. Also, make sure to visit us online or in person at 1008 Hunter East.

The Office of Assessment works with faculty and staff across the College to help them explore student learning and success in their courses, departments, programs, and offices.

Visit us online, by phone, by email, or drop by Hunter College East Building, Room 1008.
