Economics Professor Ken McLaughlin recently discussed his research on employment and federal minimum wage hikes at the American Economic Association (AEA) Annual Meeting held January 3-5, 2020 at San Diego, California. Watch Professor McLaughlin’s AEA video.
In his paper “Employment Effects of Three Rounds of Federal Minimum Wage Hikes”, Professor McLaughlin finds that there was a significant decline in the employment rates of teens and high school dropouts during two rounds of federal minimum wage hikes: 1990-1991 and 2007-2009. This decline persists after controlling for a variety of other factors.
