State Department Again Names Hunter Leading Hispanic-Serving Institution

Fulbright HSI Leader 2024

We’re honored!

The U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs again named Hunter College a leading Fulbright Hispanic Serving Institution, as it has in each of the four years since the launch of the HSI initiative in 2021.

The designation recognizes Hunter’s noteworthy support for Latino Fulbright exchange participants and robust attainment of Fulbright scholarships. It highlights Hunter's strength as a destination for international students and scholars.

It also is a testament to Hunter’s diversity and the power of public institutions to democratize education. Hunter’s student population is about a quarter Hispanic, a third immigrants, and almost three quarters minorities. About 85% of its entering classes come from New York City public schools.

Hunter’s Office of Prestigious Scholarships and Fellowships has a stellar record of preparing these diverse students for many competitive scholarships and fellowships, especially Fulbrights. In recent years, the college has produced two Rhodes, two Marshall, six Schwarzman, five Luce, eight Goldwater, and 45 Fulbright scholars, among many other prestigious awardees.

“OPS&F is proud to work closely with the Education Abroad Office to support Hunter students and alumni in applying for life-changing scholarships like the Fulbright,” said Director Stephen Lassonde.

Established in 1946, Fulbright is the U.S. government's flagship international academic-exchange program. This year, 51 colleges and universities were recognized as HSIs, including 10 CUNY colleges. In fact, CUNY has the most HSIs of any university system in the nation and is the only school to gain the designation in New York State.

In the 2022–2023 academic year, four CUNY schools — Hunter, Baruch College, Queens College, and the CUNY School of Law — were named among the nation’s top producers of Fulbright award winners.

“CUNY is proud of its long history of producing diverse Fulbright Scholars and our growing partnership with the Fulbright HSI Leaders program,” said CUNY Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez. “This year’s designation of 10 CUNY colleges — including Bronx Community College and Borough of Manhattan Community College for the first time — as Fulbright HSI Leaders signifies our commitment to supporting educational opportunity for Hispanic students throughout our system as well as for students and faculty around the world.”
