Dr. Gabriela Smeureanu was born in Romania. She earned her BS and MS degrees in chemistry at the University of Bucharest. MPhil and PhD degrees in chemistry at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. She is a doctoral lecturer in the Chemistry Department at Hunter College with over 19 years of experience teaching science to high school students, undergraduates and graduate students. Her background includes chemical education pedagogy, advising, teaching and developing curriculum in chemistry.
At the Hunter College Chemistry Department, Dr. Smeureanu coordinates instruction, develops course content and facilitates faculty collaborations across different college campuses. She serves as an departmental advisor and is involved in matters related to admissions.
Dr. Smeureanu also serves as the department coordinator for pedagogical and student success initiatives. She actively participates in the Chemistry Department’s ongoing study of the effects of flipped and active-learning classroom pedagogy on student mastery of content and grades in General Chemistry I and II courses. Related to this endeavor, she has helped the department develop and implement flipped classrooms and inquiry-based labs for introductory level chemistry courses.
