Profile

Dr. Jessica Van Parys is an assistant professor and research advisor for undergraduate honors and master's students in the Department of Economics at Hunter College. She teaches courses in econometrics and health economics, with a special interest in healthcare analysis and public policy that benefits the public good, drawing inspiration from current events, her colleagues as well as her students.

Dr. Van Parys's research centers on how physicians' practice styles affect the cost and quality-of-care that patients receive and is increasingly focused on which patients receive care from high-quality providers and why. Her work is sponsored by the National Institute on Aging through pilot grants at the National Bureau of Economic Research and The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice, and has been published in the Journal of Health Economics, Journal of Human Resources, Health Affairs and JAMA Internal Medicine, among other outlets.

Dr. Van Parys graduated from the University of Georgia in 2009 with an AB/MA in economics and a BA in political science. She obtained her PhD in economics from Columbia University and completed a post-doctoral fellowship at The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice, which helped launch her career as a health care researcher. Outside of Hunter, she has appointments at the National Bureau of Economic Research, the Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice and the CUNY Graduate Center.
