Dr. Manashi Chatterjee

Dr. Manashi Chatterjee

Doctoral Lecturer

Doctoral Lecturer Manashi Chatterjee works in the Department of Chemistry teaching organic chemistry sequence for majors using student-centered pedagogy techniques. Her research focus is organic chemistry and chemical education.

Profile

Dr. Manashi Chatterjee received her Bachelor of Science BSc from Nowrosjee Wadia College, University of Poona, India. She moved to the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Mumbai, India, to pursue her Masters of Science MSc degree in organic chemistry. After completing her MSc., she worked at the National Chemical Laboratory (N.C.L.), Pune, India, and at Dr. Reddy’s Research Foundation (DRF) Hyderabad, India for four years. She received her PhD from University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Canada. During her PhD, she synthesized and studied some interesting classes of DNA minor groove binding compounds. She moved to Scotland, UK, and spent two years as a postdoctoral researcher in professor David Leigh’s Laboratory at the University of Edinburgh. During her postdoctoral work, she synthesized and studied the operation of some new molecular machines.

Later, she moved to University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), as a lecturer of organic chemistry and worked with the Instructional Division in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry for two years. She moved to the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, where she taught for another five years. The large classroom teaching experiences at UCLA and UNL have helped her develop a student centered pedagogy so all students feel comfortable in what is perceived to be a very difficult class. She joined Hunter College in fall 2013 and is responsible for teaching the large enrollment undergraduate organic chemistry sequence for majors.
