Robert J. White is a professor emeritus in the Department of Classical and Oriental Studies of Hunter College. His doctorate is from Yale University, where he has also taught. He has lectured extensively--at the Smithsonian Institution, the Museum of Natural History, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, as well as at various American universities--on comparative mythology, secret languages of the Middle Ages, and the history of dream interpretation. His Interpretation of Dreams: The Oneirocritica of Artemidorus is the first English translation of the earliest complete manual on dream interpretation that survives from classical antiquity. His book An Avalanche of Anoraks (for People who Speak Foreign Languages Every Day... Whether They Know It or Not) was published by Crown Trade Paperbacks in 1994. Most recently, The Key to "The Name of the Rose" (which he co-authored with Adele J. Haft and Jane G. White) was reissued by University of Michigan Press (1999). He has also written articles on such contemporary authors as Pier-Paolo Pasolini, William Golding, Willa Cather, and Edward Albee.
