Seth Stein LeJacq (he/him) is a historian of Europe specializing in early modern Britain, the history of medicine, and gender and sexuality.

Profile

Seth Stein LeJacq (he/him) is a historian of Europe specializing in early modern Britain, the history of medicine, and gender and sexuality. His current research explores queer maritime history, with a focus on Britain’s navy in the age of sail. He is the editor of the sourcebook Sexual and Gender Difference in the British Navy, 1690-1900 (Routledge, 2024), and his work has appeared in journals such as Social History of Medicine, Journal for Maritime Research, International Journal of Maritime History, and Journal of the History of Sexuality. His article on sexual forensics published in the JHS was awarded the 2023 Judith R. Walkowitz Prize by the North American Conference on British Studies.

LeJacq received his BA from Cornell University and PhD from the Johns Hopkins University. His research has been supported by grants and fellowships from institutions including the Social Science Research Council, the Council on Library and Information Resources, and the Folger Library. He was a Molina Fellow in the History of Medicine at the Huntington Library (2018-9) and a Caird Fellow at the UK’s National Maritime Museum (2023-4). He has taught at Johns Hopkins, the University of Maryland-Baltimore County, Duke University, and the New York Institute of Technology.
