Title: Association for Women in Science Networking with Dr. Carmen Melendez-Vasquez
Description: We will be hosting our most requested event (and our final event of the semester)- a personal lunch with a female Hunter College faculty member. This will be held on Wednesday, May 8 in room West 214, with Dr. Carmen Melendez-Vasquez. Lunch and refreshments will be served!
This is a great opportunity for students who are looking to learn about how to find research positions with faculty members, students interested in Professor Melendez-Vasquez's specific research, and students interested in Biology research at Hunter. This is also great for those of you interested in learning about the path to a PhD or an MD-PhD, what being a Post-Doc is like, and what the experience as a woman in STEM is like.
Dr. Melendez-Vasquez has studied at the New York University School of Medicine, London University, the Venezuelan Institute for Scientific Research, and the Central University of Venezuela. Her research focuses on cytoskeletal regulation of myelin formation and repair. Myelin is a specialized membrane, which wraps around axons in the peripheral (PNS) and central (CNS) nervous systems. In diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis (CNS) and Guillain-Barre Syndrome (PNS), loss of myelin around the nerve cells results in conduction block and underlies the clinical deficit characteristic of these disorders. The long-term goal of her research is to help with the development of novel therapeutic tools to treat human demyelinating diseases.
