Title: NERA MedPrep & SMDEP Summer Program at Columbia University Information Session

Description: Cindy Estevez, the program coordinator for the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs at Columbia University Medical Center will discuss the NERA MedPrep Program. edPrep is a free, summer enrichment program targeting traditionally underrepresented and/or economically disadvantaged New York City and New Jersey resident college freshmen and sophomores interested in attending medical school. MedPrep is a 3 year summer commitment designed to give students an opportunity to develop key skills and competencies important to success on the MCAT and in medical school. Accepted New York resident students begin the MedPrep program at Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons. The MedPrep Program is best suited for candidates without summer obligations as the program is full-time. Accepted students receive stipend support. There is no application. She will also discuss the Summer Medical and Dental Education Program (SMDEP), a free six-week program for freshman and sophomores who are underrepresented in medicine and dentistry and are interested in submitting an application for the March 1, 2016 deadline.

Description: Jillian Golaszewski will give an admission talk about The Commonwealth Medical College. Description: Dr. Olivia Sheridan, DMD serves as the Assistant Dean for Admissions at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine (UPenn). She is a Hunter college alumna and will return to educate pre-dental students about the dental school admission process and will offer advice on how to become a stellar applicant.

Title: Stony Brook School of Medicine Admissions Presentation

Description: The Assistant Dean of admissions will be visiting Hunter to discuss applying to Stony Brook School of Medicine. Grace Agnetti, Assistant Dean of Admissions at Stony Brook University School of Medicine will give an admissions presentation that will cover topics such as; the medical school admissions process, being a competitive applicant and the personal statement.

Title: Complementary & Alternative Medicine Panel Discussion

Description: The Pre-Health Post-Bacc Community will be hosting the 2nd annual Complementary & Alternative Medicine Panel discussion , and everyone involved in pre-health, post-baccs and undergraduates alike, is welcome! Holistic approaches to health care are becoming increasingly popular. There are therapeutic yoga classes for cancer patients at Sloan Kettering, acupuncture treatments for post-surgery recovery at Columbia, and ongoing research into herbal teas and extracts at universities around the world. There's even a branch of the NIH devoted to the study of these treatments: The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Care. While we often have extensive exposure to traditional medicine, we often learn next to nothing about alternative medicine, even though we will be working along side them in our future careers. Come learn about the paths and practices of acupuncturists, naturopaths, chiropractors and other practitioners of complementary and alternative medicine Tuesday night! We have an excellent line up of speakers who are all practitioners of alternative and complementary medicine, and they will be available to answer our questions about their practices, their relationships with patients, their path into their specific field of healthcare, and more.
