Title: Stress and Time management for Pre-Health Students
Description: Learning how to effectively manage your stress and time will be one of the most important skills you will need to acquire in order to be successful. Reducing anxiety and procrastination, eliminating cramming, increasing motivation, and gaining extra time are a few of the many advantages of learning how to effectively manage time. Join for this workshop that will help you to maximize your time and learn how to manage Pre-Med stress. This is a required Pre-Health workshop.
Title: MD/PhD/MD-PhD Student Panel
Description: Our panel will consist of current MD-PhD student Olivia Maguire, current PhD student Camir Ricketts and OY as well as MD student Joshua Adjei.
Olivia Maguire received her BA from NYU in 2013, where she majored in biology. After working as a technician in a laboratory at NYU Medical Center, she joined the Tri-Institutional MD-PhD program of Weill Cornell Medicine, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and Rockefeller University. She is in her fourth year of the program and is currently working toward her PhD in the Laboratory of Molecular Metabolism at Rockefeller University. Her PhD research is focused on understanding the pathophysiology of treatment-related late effects, including metabolic disease, in survivors of pediatric cancers. Olivia’s career goal is to become a physician-scientist who addresses clinically relevant questions in the laboratory with the purpose of translating basic scientific findings into treatments that improve patients’ lives.
Camir Ricketts was born and raised in Montego Bay, Jamaica. In 2011, he left Jamaica to attend the University of Georgia where he studied Microbiology and Computer Science. While at UGA, he conducted research in Microbiology and successfully published his work on Mycoplasma Gallisepticum vaccine strains. He then decided that he wanted to pursue cancer research at the next level and that led him to join the Tri-Institutional Computational Biology and Medicine Program at Weill Cornell where he now works on questions surrounding cancer evolution and structural variations within tumors in the Hajirasouliha Lab. He is also currently the chair of the Tri-I Minority Society at Weill Cornell, Memorial Sloan Kettering and Rockefeller and plays a very active role in championing diversity at Weill Cornell.
OY Adesifayo is a Clark University student currently in her 5th year of her pursuit of a PhD in immunology.
Joshua Adjei is an MD Candidate, Class of 2018 at the Weill Cornell Medical College.

Dr. Samantha Sheppard- Lahiji was raised in New York. She received her BS from John Jay College Criminal Justice where she graduated Cum Laude with a degree in Forensic Science (concentration in Molecular Biology). She earned her Ph.D. in Cellular Biology from City University of New York Graduate Center at Hunter College and completed her postdoctoral research fellowship at Memorial Sloan- Kettering Cancer Center. At Memorial- Sloan Kettering she focused on standardizing quantitative assay to measure DNA repair in human cells. Dr. Samantha Sheppard- Lahiji has taught classes at Hunter since 2006 and became a teaching faculty in 2017.

Title: Pre-Health Discussion Forum: The Right to Try
Description: Over 1 million Americans die from a terminal illness every year. Many spend years searching for a potential cure, or struggle in vain to get accepted into a clinical trial. Unfortunately, FDA red tape and government regulations restrict access to promising new treatments, and for those who do get access, it’s often too late. “Right To Try” is legislation that allows terminally ill patients to access investigational treatments that have passed basic safety testing (Phase I) with the FDA, but are not yet available on pharmacy shelves.
Attached are some papers on the issue. Please skim them before the discussion. They will provide sufficient background. This discussion will focus on the ethics and efficacy of the right to try experimental treatments.

Title: Pre-Health Discussion Forum: Gene Therapy
Description: Current gene therapy research has focused on treating individuals by targeting the therapy to body cells such as bone marrow or blood cells. This type of gene therapy cannot be passed to a person’s children. Gene therapy could be targeted to egg and sperm cells (germ cells), however, which would allow the inserted gene to be passed to future generations. This approach is known as germline gene therapy.
Because gene therapy involves making changes to the body’s set of basic instructions, it raises many unique ethical concerns. The ethical questions surrounding gene therapy include:
1. How can “good” and “bad” uses of gene therapy be distinguished?
2. Who decides which traits are normal and which constitute a disability or disorder?
3. Will the high costs of gene therapy make it available only to the wealthy?
4. Could the widespread use of gene therapy make society less accepting of people who are different?
5. Should people be allowed to use gene therapy to enhance basic human traits such as height, intelligence, or athletic ability?

Description: Artificial intelligence (AI) is being embraced by hospitals and other healthcare organizations, which are using the technology to do everything from interpreting CT scans to predicting which patients are most likely to suffer debilitating falls while being treated. Electronic medical records are scoured and run through algorithms designed to help doctors pick the best cancer treatments based on the mutations in patients’ tumors, for example, or to predict their likelihood to respond well to a treatment regimen based on past experiences of similar patients.
