Trauma Management and Point of Injury Care
We will discuss the main causes of death in emergency care and learn how to manage the three preventable causes of death; which are hemorrhaging, airway compromise, and tension pneumothorax. In addition, we will go over the different phases of initial care from point of injury through medical evacuation. We will have demonstrations of some medical equipment and hands-on skills.

Fall Speaker Series: Dr. Valerie Parkas
Please join us for a conversation with Dr. Valerie Parkas, Senior Associate Dean of Admissions and Recruitment of Mount Sinai Medical Center. Dr. Parkas received both her undergraduate and medical degrees from Brown University and completed her residency training in internal medicine at New York Hospital-Cornell University Medical School and her fellowship in Infectious Diseases at Memorial Sloan Kettering. She came to the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai as an attending in the Department of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases in 1997. Dr. Parkas has been involved in both clinical care and medical education from the start of her career.
Doctor Speaker Series: Dr. Hector Sepulveda Alemany
Dr. Alemany attended undergrad at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez Campus where he majored in Biology (2010-2014). Following this, he attended the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine at San Juan, PR (2014-2018) before applying for residency. He is currently in his second year of Internal Medicine Residency at New York-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center. In addition to his time seeing patients, Hector serves as a co-chair of the Minority Housestaff Committee, organizing events and activities for underrepresented minority Internal Medicine residents.
MCAT Seminar-Set Yourself Up for MCAT Success

Weill Cornell Medical College’s Research Associate Program Information Session
Billie Johnsson will discuss Weill Cornell Medical College’s Research Associate Program. The Weill Cornell Medical College’s Research Associate Program (RAP) exposes college and post-baccalaureate students to research activities within the emergency department setting, specifically at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medicine (NYP/WCM). Program participants work in the Emergency Department between 8:00 AM – 12:00 AM, 7 days a week, to recruit patients for participation in research studies. The Research Associate Program is a research program that occurs in a clinical setting. The program is designed to involve Research Associates in many elements of the performance of research while providing opportunities for observing clinical practice in the NYP/WCM emergency department and for extended interaction with clinical providers and patients. The program provides educational and practical experiences that increase knowledge about research methodology and clinical care and may enhance participant’s application to medical or graduate school.

This workshop will offer a step-by-step detailed action plan for students to follow with the intention of providing the framework for a strong and comprehensive Physician Assistant graduate program application. The workshop will break down the students’ responsibilities as an applicant by year and consider strategies that will lead to a more competitive application. This is a required workshop for Pre-Physician Assistant students.
From BA to MD: A Talk by Dr. Abigail Benudis
Join the Psychology Club for a talk with Dr. Abigail Benudis. Dr, Benudis is a Resident Psychiatrist with an interest in the intersection of medicine and psychiatry, working with under-served populations, and quality improvement in the medical arena. Completed Bachelor of Arts in Community Health and Spanish in May 2011 at Tufts University and MD, MPH coursework in May 2017 at Tufts University School of Medicine. Substantial experience in promoting health within minority populations, including direct service clinical work, health education event planning, and medical Spanish/English translation work.

Overcoming Procrastination for Pre-Health Students
Do you find that you are frequently procrastinating assignments, studying for MCAT, DAT and important tasks? Is it a challenge to manage competing academic demands, while staying on top of assignments? If so, you are not alone. Studies suggest that up to 70% of college students struggle with managing procrastination. While this may be a common difficulty among students, falling behind academically can lead to increased stress and can cause problems in multiple areas of one’s life. This workshop is designed to help you approach your academic demands differently by discovering new pathways of thinking. You will be encouraged to challenge unhelpful thoughts and re-frame your thinking, which can often lend to more productive outcomes, including increased focus and heightened academic success. This workshop is strongly recommended for students applying in the 2020-2021 application cycle, sophomores, juniors, and seniors.
Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) and NERA MedPrep Application Workshop
The Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) formerly known as SMDEP is a free summer enrichment program focused on improving access to information and resources for college students interested in the health professions. SHPEP’s goal is to strengthen the academic proficiency and career development of students interested in the health professions and prepare them for a successful application and matriculation to health professions schools. The Northeast Regional Alliance (NERA) MedPrep Scholars Program is a partnership between New Jersey Medical School, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Center for Multicultural and Community Affairs, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and the Manhattan Staten Island Area Health Education Center. This workshop will include: - Information about the benefits of SHPEP & NERA MedPrep - Meet past SHPEP& NERA MedPrep participants - A walk-through of the application process.
How to Prepare and Apply to Physical Therapy DPT Programs
This workshop will cover everything you need to know in order to be a strong applicant to DPT programs. The workshop will discuss all aspects of preparing for and applying to DPT programs including pre-requisite coursework in the physical and social sciences, the necessary types of clinical, volunteer service, and extracurricular experiences and hours, letters of recommendation, GPA, and Test Scores. The workshop will also provide an Application Timeline and review how to navigate the PTCAS application site. This workshop is highly required for all Pre-Health students who are considering a professional career in physical therapy.

Exploring Health Professions: Clinical Psychologist
Join us for a discussion with Dr. Tyrel Sparks as we explore careers in Clinical Psychology or Health Psychology & Clinical Science, the application process for PhD. or PsyD, what entails these graduate programs require, and what career options you can pursue in healthcare after degree completion. Dr. Tyrel Sparks’s research focuses on substance use and sexual health in sexual minority populations, with a particular emphasis on relationship factors associated with sexual health in gay and bisexual men. His research incorporates an emphasis on intervention development. He is currently the PI on a NIDA funded project which seeks to develop novel interventions to reduce substance use and enhance assertive communication skills within the context of couples HIV testing and counseling with gay and bisexual couples. His work has two primary foci: How relationship expectancies, beliefs and attitudes shape health related behavior among single gay and bisexual men How individual and dyadic factors interact to influence shape health related behavior among gay and bisexual men in main partner relationships with other men.
Mental Health: The Unspoken Pre-Health Requirement
This event is an interactive talk given by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) on Campus at Hunter College. Following our mission of establishing a supportive community on campus and destigmatizing mental illness, we are going to talk about major issues a typical college student may be dealing with: depression, anxiety, and substance abuse. By discussing situations and stories that may sound way too familiar to students, particularly in pre-health field, we are hoping to communicate a better understanding of importance of one’s mental health, and increase one’s knowledge on things one can do to help themselves.We will be discussing these topics in the context of the environment a pre-health student would usually find themselves to be in, and will touch upon some specific examples such as starting school as a pre-health student; stigma in minority communities, as well as medical fields; self-medication; and others.
Naloxone Training for Pre-Health Students
Naloxone administration is an emergency intervention to prevent opioid overdose. Pre-Health students will get hands-on experience, gain some knowledge about the current opioid crisis and learn how they may help people in their communities. It is also a great experience to include on your health professions graduate school applications. This training will be conducted by the Manhattan Staten Island Area Health Education Center.
Stress Management for Pre-Health Students:The Wellness Toolbox
As a pre-health student, stress is an unavoidable part of life. Academics, volunteer hours, extracurricular activities—it all adds up. The Wellness Toolbox is a self-study workshop designed to offer participants a useful framework for developing an effective approach to overcoming stress, and unhelpful behavioral patterns. This workshop is geared to helping you learn more about yourself, early warning signs of your triggers, as well as what helps you attain a sense of wellness and what doesn’t. Join us into a journey of your Self! This is a required workshop.
FlexMed Early Assurance Program Application Preparation Workshop for Sophomores
This workshop will review the requirements for application to the FlexMed Early Assurance Program of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS). This workshop will specifically focus on how to write the FlexMed essays. A step-by-step analysis of what to discuss in each essay response and how to organize your essay responses will be reviewed. The workshop will also prepare you for the interview. The types of questions you should be prepared to answer and how to be a strong applicant will be covered. Hunter College sophomores who are currently applying or are planning to apply to the Flex-Med Program at ISMMS are strongly encouraged to attend. You will also have the opportunity to speak with successful FlexMed applicant Catherine Stratis. This workshop is a collaboration between Hunter College Macaulay Honors College and the Pre-Health Professions Advising Office.
Community Service 101 for Pre-Health Students
This event will provide information on opportunities for community service. These opportunities include; volunteer work in Disaster Services, Home Fire Preparedness training, Psychological First Aid, Soup Kitchens, Blood Drives, Mass Care and Sheltering. We will explain how each of these events helps in the betterment of those in our communities. This is a required pre-health workshop.

CARS MCAT Review Session
There are many myths about the Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills (CARS) section, one of which is that your score depends on luck. If you happen to get “good” passages, all is well, but if you don’t, you are in trouble. Thankfully, this is entirely untrue. It’s practice, not luck that will help you conquer the MCAT CARS section. Pre-Health Group Advising
Hunter Pre-health advisers will hold a group advising sessions for students with pre-health questions. This session will be held in a classroom setting and will allow students to collectively ask questions of the pre-health advising team and to learn from their pre-health peers. All are welcome, especially first-year students!
2020-2021 Committee Letter Application Workshop
The Committee Letter workshop organized by the Pre-Health Office to provide each undergraduate applicant or re-applicant with valuable information about preparing your Committee Letter Application and your medical, dental or veterinary school application. This includes guidelines for preparing Personal Statements and other parts of the application. These guidelines are presented to help applicants to craft their personal statements and other parts of their Committee Letter Application.
