Health Policy Speaker Series: Dr. William L. Schpero-The Economics of Pandemic
Joins us for a health policy talk with Dr. William L. Schpero, an Assistant Professor in the division of Health Policy and Economics Department of Healthcare Policy and Research at the Joan & Sanford I. Weill Medical College. He studies Medicaid and the health care safety net in the United States. Through his research, he aims to inform federal and state policy, as well as the work of health care providers and organizations that serve vulnerable and high-need, high-cost patient populations. He received his Ph.D. from Yale University and his undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College. Talk Topics: • 1. The Economics of Pandemic Response • 2. You will receive insights on the application process from a successful 2019-2020 applicant to medical school who has been accepted to several medical schools which include, NYU Grossman School of Medicine, University of Michigan Medical School, Duke University School of Medicine, Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University, SUNY Downstate College of Medicine. Target audience: 2020-2021 & 2021-2022 applicants
Preparing Your Secondary Essays for Health Profession Applications
This online workshop will cover everything you need to know about writing your secondary essays for medical, dental, vet, or other health profession applications, including: Why secondary essays are a critical component of your health profession application, •A review of common secondary essay questions, • Tips for how to write effective secondary essays, •Tips for what to avoid in writing your secondary essays, •Organizing the completion of your secondary essays, and •The timing for submitting your secondary essays. Sample secondary essays will be reviewed and copies will be available. This is a required application planning workshop for Committee Letter and Letter Packet recipients.
Methods in Narrative Medicine Workshop Series # 1
The Pre-Health Advising Office in partnership Columbia University’s Masters Program in Narrative Medicine will be offering a Methods in Narrative Medicine workshop series. This Basic Workshops provides an intensive introductory experience to the methods and skills of Narrative Medicine. These intensive workshops will offer rigorous skill-building in narrative competence. Participants will learn effective techniques for attentive listening, adopting others’ perspectives, accurate representation, and reflective reasoning. Sessions will focus on reconceptualizing empathy, narrative ethics, bearing witness, and illness narratives. Professionalism, cultural competence, bioethical competence, interpersonal communication skills, self-reflective practice, and ability to work with health care teams can be strengthened by increasing narrative competence. You may also include this experience on your application to health professional schools.

Naloxone Training for Pre-Health Students
Naloxone administration is an emergency intervention to prevent opioid overdose. Pre-Health students will get hands-on experience, gain some knowledge about the current opioid crisis and learn how they may help people in their communities. It is also a great experience to include on your health professions graduate school applications. This training will be conducted by the Manhattan Staten Island Area Health Education Center.
Community Service 101 for Pre-Health Students
This event will provide information on opportunities for community service. These opportunities include; volunteer work in Disaster Services, Home Fire Preparedness training, Psychological First Aid, Soup Kitchens, Blood Drives, Mass Care and Sheltering. We will explain how each of these events helps in the betterment of those in our communities. This is a required pre-health workshop.
