The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot, focuses on the ethical issues regarding race in medicine through the story of Henrietta Lacks.
Henrietta was a cancer patient and for research purposes, her cells were extracted during a biopsy without her permission. Many groundbreaking treatments were introduced just from culturing her cells (which are now commonly known as HeLa) and many people were compensated for their research—while the woman at the center of this could not even afford health insurance. Henrietta's contribution continues to be an important medical source to this date. This book is relevant in understanding medical ethics and a patient's rights and privacy.
We look forward to a lively and engaging discussion. Participation is required.
