Ann Fadiman tells the story of a family whose daughter is diagnosed with a severe form of epilepsy. However, due to culture, mistrust, misdiagnosis, and miscommunication prevents the patient from receiving proper medical care. The book highlights the importance of cultural competence and the importance of the language shared between doctors and patients.
