Emelin Martinez currently manages multiple programs at New York-Presbyterian Hospital. Over the past 14years, she has been working in partnership with community leaders and faculty members from Columbia University Medical Center; she has ensured the delivery of the ROR (Reach Out & Read) Program. Under her leadership, the program has reached over 10,000 children and families.
To maximize the impact of the program's mission, Emelin has facilitated training sessions for 1st-year medical residents to embed the ROR model within the well-child visits. In her efforts to help address the Social Determinants of Health and Health Literacy of patients who residence in Norther Manhattan, Emelin initiated the WALLE (Waiting Room as a Literacy Learning Environment) Program, which is a spinoff of the HEAL (Health Education and Adult Literacy) Program.
HEAL was a volunteer-based initiative that trained students who were interested in the medical field to understand and implement the tenets of health literacy as they worked to address the needs of a mostly immigrant underserved community.
