Person(s) Trapped in Elevator

  • Use the Emergency Intercom in the elevator to speak with someone in the Office of Public Safety or
  • Use your cell phone to call the Office of Public Safety at 212-772-4444.
  • Press the alarm button.
  • Wait for help to arrive.
  • Remain calm.
  • Talk to them.
  • Try to keep them calm until help arrives.
  • Use your cell phone to call the Office of Public Safety at 212-772-4444.
  • Give location of the elevator (i.e. building and floor).
  • Number of people trapped.
  • Report any injuries/medical conditions.
  • Report any noises or occurrences that took place before the event.

Do not attempt to open elevator doors at any time, nor attempt to exit the elevator if the doors should open between floors.

• For each elevator you ride, locate the elevator STOP button and the Emergency Intercom, in case you must stop the elevator.
