Hate Crime Log
In compliance with New York State legislation S.2060-A/A.3694-A, which requires colleges and universities to report and post incidents of hate crime offenses, Public Safety maintains a log of hate crimes that have occurred at or on the grounds of the institution and been reported to the Department of Public Safety.
When an incident is reported to Public Safety, if it is a suspected hate crime, it is then reported to NYPD. It is NYPD who determines the final classification of the incident.
Prior to the change in policy from the legislation, Public Safety determined the following entries dating 7/31/23 and before to be hate crimes. Entries after 7/31/23 must be determined to be a hate crime by NYPD.
It is important to note that while all hate crimes are bias incidents, not all bias incidents are hate crimes. The legislation uses Penal Law section 485.05 for the definition of “hate crime.” For additional information on hate crimes and bias incidents, please see this infographic from the Office for the Prevention of Hate Crimes.
