Apply to Become a Peer Tutor

The Hunter College RWC is a peer tutoring program that offers writing support to all students in the college.

Just as students from all majors and disciplines may find themselves in need of writing support, students from all majors and disciplines can offer writing support. Good peer writing tutors:

• are not only strong academic writers, but are also comfortable talking about writing
• have good verbal communication skills and work well with others
• can take constructive feedback
• are willing to learn new pedagogical strategies and methods.

If that sounds like you, then we invite you to apply to become a peer writing tutor.

If you would like to become a peer writing tutor, you must:

• be matriculated at Hunter, either as an undergraduate or graduate student
• have at least two semesters before graduation, and be able to tutor for the next two semesters
• have completed the following:
  • Composition 1 (ENGL 120 or equivalent)
  • Composition 2 (ENGL 220, AFPRL 238, ASIAN 221, MEDIA 211, or equivalent)
  • at least one upper-level class that required a signifcant amount of writing

• be able to attend our weekly paid staff meeings on Tuesday from 3pm to 3:45pm

If you do not meet these requirements, we will not be able to consider your application.

We prefer to hire tutors who have at least a 3.0 GPA.

Tutors are hired on the basis of two interviews, an academic writing sample, and a piece of extemporaneous writing, which reflects on the part two interview. We do not require a resume or CV. References and/or recommendations from faculty are welcome, but are not required.

• The first interview is a group interview that focuses on the RWC's pedagogical principles. Part one interviews typically run 90-120 minutes.
• The second interview is an individual interview that focuses on the practical application of the RWC's pedagogical principles. Part two interviews typically run 60-90 minutes.
• The academic writing sample should be a 5-10 page paper from a recent class. The paper should incorporate secondary research and should be documented in accordance with either MLA, APA, or Chicago citation styles.

All interviews for the Fall semester are conducted in July. All interviews for the Spring semester are conducted in January.

We accept applications on a rolling basis throughout the academic year. The deadline is June 25th for Fall applicants and December 25th for Spring applicants.

If you apply after the deadline, we may have to defer your application to the next semester.
