Letters of Recommendation

It is always my pleasure to write on behalf of students. You will have a whole team at Hunter behind you, so consider who is the best writer for a particular opportunity, whether it is an internship, summer opportunity, prestigious award, or a job. Setting up a time to discuss your goals is generally helpful. Asking no less than three (3) weeks ahead of time helps to ensure that you will have your letter timely.

When we meet to discuss your letter, please provide in advance:

  1. Draft essays & full application for the opportunity (or for a job/internship -> cover letter)
  2. Resume
  3. Unofficial transcript from CUNYfirst
  4. Abstract for each significant paper (not the whole paper) written or planned such as capstone, thesis, independent study, Mellon Humanities Grant
  5.  Brief description of each meaningful leadership or prior fellowship role
  6.  List of classes and experiences most immediately relevant to your long term goals, with brief bulleted description of each (no need to repeat descriptions if above)

Please include in the body of the email:

  1. Link to award website/job description
  2. Language of prompt for letter writers (as relevant)
  3. Brief and specific rationale for what the opportunity means to you and why you are a good fit
  4. If this is for a prestigious award, please note eligibility requirements and demonstrate that you meet them
