MA in French

Program Overview

The MA program in French provides opportunities for professional advancement in teaching and professional fields that require a good knowledge of other languages and culture. Take advantage of our film programs, conversation groups, student journals, lectures and the Romance Languages Film Festival!

Master of Arts (MA) inFrench

You'll need 30 credits to complete the MA in French degree.

You'll complete the following:

  1. Courses
    Earn at least 30 credits
    A total of 30 credits from the Literature of Specialization including a Thesis Seminar (3cr) for those students electing to write a master’s essay.
  2.  Languages
    In addition to a high degree of competence in the language of specialization, candidates must demonstrate a reading knowledge of a second Romance language, German, or Latin.
  3. Comprehensive Examination
    Candidates must pass a written examination on the field of study, in the language of specialization.
  4. Master’s Essay and Thesis Seminar
    The master’s essay is optional. The topic is determined in consultation with your principal adviser.
    Thesis Seminar, to be taken concurrently with preparation of the essay, is completed when the essay is approved by the principal adviser and another faculty member.

You must meet the following minimum requirements in order to be considered for admission. Meeting these minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance to the program.

  • Bachelor’s degree comparable to a bachelor's degree from Hunter
  • College and university transcripts
  • Minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0
  • At least 18 credits of upper level undergraduate courses in French literature.
  • Official score report of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test*
  • Two letters of recommendation from appropriate academic or professional references.
  • A statement of purpose of approximately 500 words describing your objectives in undertaking graduate study. In reviewing applications, considerable importance is placed on the applicant’s interest in and commitment to advanced study and professional development.
  • Applicants whose native language is not English and who have taken all or part of their undergraduate education in a country where English is not the native language are required to submit scores on the TOEFL/IELTS. The following minimum scores must be obtained:
    • TOEFL iBT: 80/ Paper Based Test: 550/ Computer Administered Test: 213
    • IELTS: 6.5 Overall Band Score

*The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is currently waived for both the incoming Spring 2025 and Fall 2025 class.

Here are 10 career paths for someone with a Master's in French, along with general responsibilities and approximate salary ranges. Note that salary ranges can vary widely depending on factors such as experience, location within NYC, and specific industry.

Responsibilities: Provide customer support in both English and French, handle inquiries, resolve issues, and ensure customer satisfaction.

Salary Range: $40,000 - $60,000 per year.

Responsibilities: Teach French language skills to employees within a corporate setting, create lesson plans, and assess language proficiency.

Salary Range: $60,000 - $90,000 per year.

Responsibilities: Manage human resources functions in a multicultural environment, including recruitment, onboarding, and employee relations.

Salary Range: $55,000 - $85,000 per year.

Responsibilities: Develop and maintain positive relationships with French-speaking media, create press releases, and manage communication strategies.

Salary Range: $60,000 - $90,000 per year.

Responsibilities: Translate written documents or provide oral interpretation between English and French in various settings, such as meetings or conferences.

Salary Range: $45,000 - $75,000 per year.

Responsibilities: Teach French language and literature courses at the university level, conduct research, and mentor students.

Salary Range: $60,000 - $100,000 per year.

Applicants are encouraged to apply as early as possible. Hunter College may consider late applications on a rolling basis pending space is still available in the program.

Applicants whose native language is not English and who have taken all or part of their undergraduate education in a country where English is not the native language are required to submit scores on the Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The following minimum scores must be obtained:
