MA in Biology with Specialization in Biotechnology

Program Overview

In our program you will gain a theoretical knowledge and skills in molecular biology, and a foundation for application of these skills in careers in the biotechnology/pharmaceutical industry, academic research, or public health.

Master of Arts (MA) in Biological Sciences with Specialization in Biotechnology

Students must obtain 30 credits to complete the Master of Arts in Biological Sciences with a Specialization in Biotechnology along with a passing grade on a comprehensive examination or a thesis.

In this five-year program, qualified undergraduate Hunter College biology majors begin graduate work as seniors and receive the MA one year after completing BA requirements. Students are provided with theoretical knowledge and skills in molecular biology, and a foundation for application of these skills in careers in the biotechnology/pharmaceutical industry, academic research, or public health. Successful completion of the biotechnology workshop, an essential program component, entitles students to a summer internship in an industrial or private research laboratory.

You must meet the following minimum requirements in order to be considered for admission. Meeting these minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance to the program.

  • Baccalaureate degree in biology or related fields
  • Minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0
  • GRE (general part) to be taken before registering for 700-level courses

Students Educated Outside the US

Applicants whose native language is not English and who have taken all or part of their undergraduate education in a country where English is not the native language are required to submit scores on the Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The following minimum scores must be obtained:

  • TOEFL iBT: 80/ Paper Based Test: 550/ Computer Based Test: 213
  • IELTS: 6.5 Overall Band Score
