Program Currently Suspended

Program Overview

Our graduate programs in chemistry train research scientists to create new knowledge that impacts both fundamental scientific principles and addresses societal needs. Our vibrant and well-funded research labs provide essential training, along with shared state-of-the-art facilities and instruments.

Master of Arts (MA) in Chemistry

Students must obtain at least 30 credits to complete the Master of Arts in Chemistry.

See details in the College Catalog

The Master of Arts in Chemistry consists of at least 30 graduate credits.

Requirements for successful completion of the program:

  • Proficiency: Students must be able to demonstrate proficiency in laboratory techniques. Students unable to demonstrate such proficiency may be required to take whatever laboratory work the graduate committee deems necessary.
  • Foreign language: Demonstrated ability to read and utilize in research the foreign language chosen from French, German, or Russian, most closely related to the student’ s program of graduate study.
  • Mathematics, Physics and Chemical Engineering: Graduate courses in mathematics, physics and chemical engineering up to maximum of 6 credits may be taken with the approval of the departmental committee.
  • Comprehensive examination: A comprehensive examination will be required of all candidates.

The department graduate committee may at its discretion waive or modify some required courses for students who have had the equivalent training. In such cases the student may be required to show competence through formal or informal examination.

See Course List in the College Catalog
